The Federal Government has inaugurated the committee on revamping and repositioning of Federal Unity Colleges in the country .
The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, Mrs Didi Walson-Jack disclosed this in a statement made available to newsmen by the Director of Pres and Public Relations, Folasade Boriowo.
She said this committee is a significant move towards revitalising the Federal Unity Colleges (FUCs).
Walson-Jack said it is also a strategic initiative aimed to enhance the quality of education infrastructure, and overall students experience in these pivotal institutions.
Highlighting the critical role of Federal Unity Colleges in fostering National integration and providing quality Education, Walson-Jack acknowledged the challenges that have emerged over the years.
“Despite their achievements in promoting unity, Girl Child Education, and academic excellence, our Federal Unity Colleges face significant hurdles, including declining educational standards and deteriorating facilities,” she stated.
She said the newly established Committee is tasked with addressing these issues comprehensively.
“Their mandate includes improving academic performance, upgrading infrastructure, enhancing security measures, and bolstering pastoral care.
“Additionally, the committee will review existing policies, streamline donation processes, and explore alternative funding methods to ensure a sustainable and modern educational system that prepares students for a complex, interconnected world,” she added.
The Chairman of the committee, Director, Senior Secondary Education, Mrs Binta Abdulkadri, who was represented by a Director in her department, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead this critical initiative.
She emphasised the urgent need for revitalisation to make FUCs beacons of hope and academic excellence.
“We pledge to work tirelessly, in collaboration with all stakeholders, to fulfill our mandate and bring positive change to the Federal Unity Colleges,” she affirmed.
Also, Chinedu Amure, Vice President General of USOSA, echoed these sentiments by highlighting the vital role of Alumni in this transformation.
Drawing from her extensive experience both as a student and educator in Unity Schools, she emphasised the necessity of revamping the institutions to restore their former glory.
“A multi-pronged approach is required, addressing admission processes, funding, faculty development, and curriculum improvement.
“This will ensure Unity Schools once again become beacons of academic excellence and national unity,” Amure noted.
Representing the Unity Schools Old Students Association (USOSA), Mrs Anthonia Ekah expressed deep appreciation for the committee’s formation.
“This initiative is a testament to the Ministry’s commitment to excellence in education. USOSA is honored to partner in this noble endeavour, and we are fully dedicated to exceeding the committee’s objectives,” she stated.
