The Action People’s Party (APP) has emerged victorious in 22 out of the 23 local government chairmanship seats in the recently concluded elections in Rivers State.
The results were announced by the Chief Electoral Officer, Adolphus Enebeli, on Saturday night in Port Harcourt.
The result for Etche Local Government Area is pending due to ongoing collation, but the election was reported to have had a smooth process and a large voter turnout, with Enebeli praising the residents for their active participation.
However, the election day was marred by two explosions and gunfire in certain parts of Port Harcourt, with the police currently investigating these incidents.
Some of the winners include Vincent Reuben Obu (Abua/Odual), Chibudom Ezu (Ahoada-East), Mrs. Tonye Oniyide (Akuku-Toru), Dr. Sule Amachree (Asari-Toru), and Dame Anengi Barasua (Bonny).
This major victory for APP follows the defection of several caretaker committee chairmen, loyal to Governor Sim Fubara, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APP.
The defections are said to have been triggered by former Governor Nyesom Wike’s alleged control of the PDP structure in the state.
