Speaker, Nasarawa State House of Assembly Rt. Hon. Danladi Jatau has called on LG legislators in the State to ensure that they scrutinize their councils expenditures for transparency, accountability and good governance at the grassroots.
The Speaker gave the advice while hosting members of the Local Government Legislative Councils in the Assembly complex today Monday.
The delegation under the Forum of Speakers of LG Legislative Councils comprised of Speakers of the 13 LGAs in the State and their Principal Officers.
Speaker Jatau acknowledged that there are discrepancies in the local government expenditures and tasked the legislative arms of the local governments to scrutinize their expenditures to ensure transparency, accountability and good governance at the third tiers of government.
The Speaker commended the federal and state governments for prioritizing the local government autonomy.
Jatau reminded them that development would only strive if there is effective synergy with local government chairmen advising them to give emphasis on that for peace, unity and development of the State.
He assured them of the Assembly’s support in the area of workshops and trainings as new comers to guide them to make good by-laws.
The Speaker assured that the Assembly will ensure that local government law in respect to the autonomy is strictly adhere to in the State.
“I want to congratulate you all for your victories at the poll, you are the chosen ones, you are the most close to the people at the grassroots and a lot is expected from you.
” You most justify the confidence reposed on you, and I also want to commend Governor Abdullahi Sule for providing enable environment for LG election in the State and I assured you of full support from the House, emulate us, you must embrace peace and unity among yourselves and with the Chairmen” He said.
Earlier, Chairman, Nasarawa State Forum of Speakers of Local Government Legislative Councils, Rt. Hon. Mohammed Shuaibu Madaki commended the Assembly for passing into law the local government law which he envisaged would promote transparency and accountability as well as enhance speedy development at the third tier of government.
The Chairman, however, appealed to the State House of Assembly to constitute a committee to ascertain the real financial expenses and capacity of local governments in the State amidst financial autonomy.

Madaki also sued for synergy between the forum and the assembly for the overall development of the state just as he delivered a well articulated speech that captured all areas of concern as they set for a new phase in the local government governance.
