A Federal High Court in Kano State on Monday sentenced a 50-year-old security guard, Abubakar Muhammad, to seven years in prison for sexually exploiting his 14-year-old stepdaughter.
Muhammad, who lives at Wailari Quarters in Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano, was convicted on a count charge of sexual exploitation, after he pleaded guilty.
The Presiding Judge, Justice S.M. Shu’aibu, held that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt and consequently sentenced the defendant to seven years without an option of fine.
Earlier, Mr Abdullahi Babale, the Prosecutor, National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Kano State Zonal Commander, told the court that Muhammad committed the offence at Wailari Quarters in Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State on Jan. 24, 2025.
He said Muhammad lured his 14-year-old stepdaughter into his wife’s room at Wailari Quarters when the woman travelled to Jigawa and sexually exploited her.
He added that the defendant had carnal knowledge of the stepdaughter on four different occasions and gave her N2,000 to add to her soya beans cake business.
Babale then presented two exhibits, including the confessional statement of the defendant and the girl’s testimony to the court to prove his case.
He said that the offence contravened the provisions of Section 16(1) of the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act, 2015, punishable under Section 26(1) of TIP ACT 2015.
The Defence Counsel, Mr I. I. Umar, pleaded for leniency on behalf of the convict.
